The Internet has completely transformed the job search process. Conducting an online search can even be intimidating to some, so  we (the Career Services department at Community Care College) have put together a few tips to help you embark on this online adventure.

1. Check Your Digital Brand.
Employers are now using various websites to conduct an online search of potential employees. We understand the importance of keeping our Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter accounts professional and that it’s a good idea to change our privacy settings so we control who views our pages. But it is also important to know that your online presence goes beyond your LinkedIn and Facebook profile.

Before actively starting your job search you will need to Google yourself regularly to make sure there aren’t any surprises. Questionable photos or postings will hurt your chances of not only securing the job but the interview itself. Before starting your search, be sure that your online presence is professional and will not give a hiring manager a bad impression.

2. Know Your Stuff
When you find an employer that is a great fit, research the company! This will give you plenty to write about in your cover letter and help you answer the popular interview question, “Why are you interested in our company?” This is a phenomenal strategy that could help bring your resume to the top of the pile.  Researching the company you’re applying to is simple and essential.

3. Details Matter
You will likely apply for more than one position online. Don’t send the same information to every potential employer.  Modify your resume to fit the position you are applying for and use the company’s job description to customize your objective statement or personal profile.  Don’t forget to take the time to proofread everything!

Searching for a position doesn’t have to be a drag. Remember Career Services is here to help. For more helpful tips like subscribe to our blog and feel free to come see us in person. We are here to help make your next job search a breeze
