I am not sure who coined the phrase, “Dress for the life you want, or the career you want,” but it’s a quote I have always lived by. You have to wear clothes every day, so why not enjoy it and have fun! So much of the way you’re presenting yourself is what matters most. When you dress for the career or life you want, you start to embody and put off an energy that is in line with that way of life or career. When you are dressed in an outfit that makes you feel good about yourself, it is empowering. There is a certain type of energy that comes from feeling put together. Take a look at three steps to help you enhance your wardrobe and start dressing for the life you want!

Step 1: Assess What You Currently Own

Take a good look at your wardrobe in your closet and assess. How many items in your closet that you currently own suit the life that you want? Or do they represent a life that you used to lead, your past? Let go of those articles of clothing that are what I call a safety net. There are certain clothes that we sometimes hide behind and we convenience ourselves that they are comfortable and that’s why we wear them. Challenge yourself to step away from the safety net and have some fun!

Step 2: Research

Conduct research online or by observing others in your same career, and examine how they dress. What do successful people in your given field look like? Then put your own spin and flare into a successful wardrobe. Remember you want to be authentic to you and not carbon copies of others. When it comes to fashion it’s always, “Flattering not following!”

Step 3: Go Shopping

This step does not suggest that you should go out and get a whole new wardrobe, or dress in clothes you can’t afford and spend a lot of money. First take the time to shop your own closet, look for things you already own that you can restyle and will enhance the looks you are going for. Thrift shops, consignment stores, and garage sales are great places to find inexpensive clothing; sometimes you can even find pieces that still have the tags! Another great way to save money is have a clothing swap party with friends. You all bring over all the clothing you no longer wear anymore and shop each other’s stuff. And the best part is it’s FREE!!

Fashion with intention can be powerful! Clothing has a power to enhance your attributes and personality, so that the way you feel on the inside comes out through your wardrobe. Let your clothes make a statement about who you are, and dress for the life and career you want!
