Did you know that Barbie has has had more than 130 careers; they have included being an elementary school teacher, a business executive, a McDonald’s cashier, a doctor, an astronaut, and yes, even a rapper?  After reading a blog recently on 18 Surprising Things You Don’t Know About Barbie it really made me stop and think about some of you. Here in Career Services we see 100’s of resumes every year.

Let’s start with some resume basics:

You only have to show 10 years of employment: 8cdae5f1111c30c9db2556fee422bc59

This is great to know and good for Barbie (aka: Barbara Millicent Roberts).  Seeing as how Barbie has been around since 1959, she will not need to show all 130 careers on her resume.

Do you look like a job hopper?

There is more than one types of resume format. While a reverse-chronological resume clearly presents how recently in your career you accomplished a given achievement, it doesn’t necessarily focus the reader’s attention on the job seeker’s strengths. So my first recommendation to Mrs. Roberts (aka: Barbie), would be to consider a Functional or a Hybrid resume format.

Here are some definitions of the different resume styles:

Reverse-chronological resume:  A chronological resume starts by listing your work history, with the most recent position listed first.

Your jobs are listed in reverse chronological order with your current, or most recent job, first. Your education, skills, and other information are listed after your experience.

Employers typically prefer this type of resume because it’s easy to see what jobs you have held and when you have worked at them.

Functional Resume: A functional resume focuses on your skills and experience, rather than on your chronological work history. A functional resume is typically used by job seekers who are changing careers or who have gaps in their employment history.

Hybrid resume: In a hybrid resume you can build up separate sections that cover both chronological information and functional information.

So even if your resume looks like Barbies, there is still hope when searching for a job during a career change. I am quite confident that with the right style resume you will not only be able to land the job but still be just a fabulous as one of the most beloved childhood dolls of all time.
